Assistant Professor (W1) in Financial Economics


Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU) is an internationally oriented and regionally networked university with a strong research profile.

The Faculty of Economics and Management of OVGU in cooperation with the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) seeks to fill two positions at the rank of Assistant Professor (W1) in Financial Economics to begin in October 2027.

Tasks & Responsibilities

The successful candidates will:

  • Strengthen the collaboration between the University and the IWH, which is one of the seven economic research institutes of the Leibniz Association
  • Strengthen the joint research focus in Finance of the IWH and OVGU
  • Join IWH’s Department of Laws, Regulations and Factor Markets and the Financial Markets Department, respectively
  • Teach in the Faculty’s Bachelor and Masters Programmes and in the PhD program of IWH-DPE

Qualifications

  • Strong teaching and broadly defined research profiles in Financial Economics with potential for academic excellence
  • Focus on Labor and Finance, Financial Intermediation, or Corporate Finance is particularly useful
  • Employment of rigorous quantitative methods and state-of-the-art empirical approaches
  • Experience with the latest AI methods is desirable
  • Keen interest to apply economic research to policy questions is advantageous

Educational requirements & Certificates

  • Completion of a PhD in Economics or Finance by summer of 2027 at the latest

Professional experience

  • Potential for successful publications in leading international journals
  • Ideally an emerging network of international research collaborations

Abilities & Skills

  • Knowledge of German is desirable, but not a requirement

Working hours & Conditions

  • The employees are assigned the status of civil servants with limited tenure (Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit )
  • The contract will initially be limited to three years, and may be extended by a further three years given a positive evaluation
